Summer Roll Out: Age of the Serum

Faster, lighter, stronger. These are a few words that would describe a car built to race down Monaco. Yet, these are actually the attributes of a high impact, skincare serum. They are light, fast absorbing liquids that hold a high concentration of over-the-counter (OTC) actives and are used in conjunction or as an alternative to creams/lotions. So when should one use a serum as an alternative to a cream? And what can one look for in a serum?

As the days get hotter and the cabanas begin to fill with the sound of glassware being sifted into the pool, an increase in the skin's oil production can go array on normal to oily skin types. Especially on the T-zone (shown here).

 Ah, wrong letter.

As the T-zone, shown above, indicates the area from the bottom of the nose to the upper forehead, during high humidity levels and heat, sebaceous glands begin to release oils. As serums omit heavy oils and other airtight moisturizing agents, they are the weapons of choice. A weapon against acne, redness, rough texture, ageing spots, deep expression lines, discoloration, sunburn etc., depending on what is needed.

Serums are the top pick during the day. Ni’Kita Wilson, a chemist and VP of research at Englewood Labs tell us that she chooses a serum instead of a cream during hot spells: “It works better for my oily skin, and it has every ingredient I need.” She says, sipping on a light roast café de Colombia. “The beauty of a serum is that most of the fluid is eliminated, so what you are left with is a high concentration of actives.” Diving into the dermatology aspect of a serum is unnecessary this time around, although using a serum can differ from using a cream.

How to use a Serum:

  1. After cleansing your face in the shower or in the bathroom sink, apply a pea-sized amount on your fingertips, patting it evenly around the T-zone or around the face.
  2. Apply 60 sec after the shower for an increased effect. This is the time that pores are open the most.
  3. Apply a non pore-clogging cream (non-comedogenic).
  4. Use in the morning or before bed.

Serums may come at a high price tag because of their actives. Making sure there is a balance between the wallet and the worth can be achieved by educating yourself on both the product and what the brand can give.  Stay in the know. GOA Skincare break into the game by adding a Collagen + Control facial Serum to it's anti-vice skin solution line-up.
