The 7 Deadly Sins of Acne. What Can You Do?

The 7 Deadly Sins of Acne. What Can You Do?

4 minute read

Not really 7 deadly sins but more like 7 lifestyle moments everyone goes through. Though you might not be prone to acne breakouts, there are instances where acne can creep up on you when you least expect it. Here are seven of these reasons and how to deal with them.

1. Stress

Over time, stress increases levels of the cortisol hormone which sends oil-producing glands on overdrive. Combine this with dead skin cells and a pinch of bacteria and you’ve got yourself a recipe for acne flambée. Adults are more prone to this kind of acne breakout as dead skin turnover slows over time.

How to Deal

Pinpoint the cause of stress and get yourself a yoga mat or some CBD, exercise, practice meditation, or just go out for a walk. Lowering stress is not only great for your skin but also for your entire body, reducing the risk of many diseases or/and disorders.

2. Smoking & Pollution

Gases and particulate matter that are released into the air don’t penetrate the skin at first; instead, they trigger an avalanche of damage on the skin’s surface. Eventually, that damage makes it easier for the pollutants to get into your skin. Smaller airborne pollutants get stuck in pores, not only causing acne-like breakouts but fine lines and wrinkles as well.

How to Deal

You can’t completely protect your skin from pollution. It’s simply too widespread to stop altogether unless you’re wearing a hazmat suit. Yet, there are certain skincare tools that can help degrade certain particulate matter in the skin. For example, GOA’s Anti-Acne Face Set.

3.  Touch & Pop

Even as I write, I notice my hand propping my chin up. Yep, it’s one of the most common acne triggers. We do this subconsciously as bacteria and the pressure applied to make it the perfect condition for acne. Looking to pop? I highly recommend not playing surgeon.

How to Deal

Wash your hands and keep'em where you can see 'em.

4. Sun Exposure

If you've heard that sunlight can kill acne, well, it’s a myth. And while there is a correlation to vitamin D production from the sun, sunlight can actually trigger a particular variety of acne known as Mallorcan Acne. This is more of an allergic reaction you get when chemicals in sunblock react with UVA rays.

How to Deal

Making sure your sunblock does not cause further damage, look out for heavy oils or ingredients like:

  • Vitamin E
  • Coconut
  • Mineral and soybean oils
  • Beeswax
  • Lanolin
  • Cocoa butter

5. Sugar

Processed carbohydrates (like white sugar) can influence two major causes of acne: hormones and inflammation. They do this by increasing your blood sugar levels which in turn raises insulin secretion. High insulin levels increase the production of oils in the skin, leading to your follicles and pores clogging up with sebum.

How to Deal

Other than moderation, there are substitutes for sugary treats out there that can cover your vice. Anyone for some agave syrup?

6. Alcohol

Drinking can cause an imbalance in testosterone levels, which is a major hormone that can cause breakouts. The skin begins to produce sebum that clogs pores with oil and bacteria. To make matters even worse with binge drinking, the immune system begins to be compromised and increases the risk of other, more serious issues.

How to Deal

Moderate. Moderate. Moderate

7. Sleep

When you are not getting enough sleep, you risk raising levels of stress-related hormones in your body like cortisol. With an inflow of cortisol, your skin oil glands produce more oil. Too much oil can lead to a buildup that eventually blocks pores and roots of your hair.

How to Deal

Exercise can banish your sleeping issues so you can head to bed at a reasonable hour. If that doesn't work, I wouldn't mess around with melatonin as this can bring an even greater imbalance - go more natural with personalized doses of CBD instead.
